Patriots Silence Spartans
 Good form! |
On Monday, December 10th, the boys varsity Lincoln Patriots basketball team won their sixth straight game to remain undefeated in the Capital Conference (6-0, 8-1 overall). They handed the Central High School Spartans their third loss in the league (5-5 overall, 4-3 conference) with a surprisingly close 78-71 win at the Lincoln High School gym. Though the Patriots led after every quarter, the Spartans went on a 10-2 run late in the fourth quarter to pull within two at 70-68 with 2:04 left in the game.
However, Lincoln senior captain Jim Sorroto showed his leadership skills and determination, scoring six of his team’s final eight points in the closing minutes to put the game out of reach for the Spartans.
Up 74-71 with :38 remaining, Sorroto sank a three pointer from the left wing that sealed the Patriots victory.
Central was unable to respond on their next trip down the court, and they were forced to resort to fouls when Donnie Haywood grabbed the rebound after a Central miss with :26 remaining.
Central point guard Mike Williams was able to sink a three pointer to cut the lead to 78-71 after Haywood made one of two free throws, but by then the Spartans were out of time and the game would finish at that score.
The game actually looked like it might get out of hand early when Lincoln led 24-11 after the first quarter. Haywood powered the Patriots offense in that quarter, taking full use of his three-inch height advantage over Central center Justin Gaines with powerful moves in the paint. He scored on two straight Patriots possessions on entry passes into the low post from Sorroto, moving agilely around Gaines with his back to the basket to get easy lay-ups.
Near the end of the quarter, Haywood excited the Patriots large Patriots crowd—almost 1,000 people attended the game, including at least 350 Patriots Fan Club students organized in the student section—with a powerful dunk. Power forward Greg Henderson threw the ball up-court to Sorroto to create a fast break opportunity after a Spartans bucket. Sorroto and Constantino DiPlata had a clear two-on-one break as they sprinted up-court, but as Sorroto drove to the basket he dished it off to the trailer Haywood, who grabbed the ball and quickly put it away with a monstrous two-handed slam dunk.
The Spartans proved resilient in the ensuing quarter though, going on two separate 6-0 runs in the quarter to head to the locker room trailing 37-32 at halftime. Mike Williams was key in the quarter for the Spartans, as he was throughout the game, in almost single-handedly keeping the game within reach for his team. Three of his four three-pointers came in the quarter, including back-to-back threes that pulled the Spartans within three at 35-32 with :33 until half. But Keon Jones hit a pull-up twelve-footer that beat the buzzer to bring the Patriots lead back to five at half. He would finish with 11 points in the game. Altogether Central’s Williams scored twelve of his team-leading 22 points in the second quarter.
Lincoln played slightly better than the opponent in the third quarter, outscoring Central 20-17 in the quarter to put the score at 57-49 after three. Though Central managed 22 points in the final quarter, it wasn't enough to overcome the Patriots' high-flying offense. Donnie Haywood was the game's leading scorer, with 23 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Coach Cole praised Donnie after the game, saying, "He played one of the most dominant games I've ever seen him play tonight…if he keeps playing that strong the rest of the season, that will be vital if we want postseason success." Jim Sorroto also played a key role for the Patriots, dishing out 10 assists—including seven to Haywood—and scoring 16. Besides Williams, Central also got a strong performance from junior forward Mark Utley, who had 17 points and 8 boards. Central’s next game is home against 2-4 Jefferson Friday, while Lincoln also next plays at home on Friday. They face second-place Washington in what should be an extremely exciting game that will include a Patriots Fan Club-sponsored "craziest fan contest," which should draw hundreds of rowdy students to fill up the gym for the rivalry game.
