Sorroto Comes up Clutch, Hear his Story
One day after his clutch performance late in the fourth quarter put away streaking Central High School, Lincoln's senior point guard Jim Sorroto spoke about the game and his effort.
Q: How big was the win over Central on Monday?
A: It was big for us, because it kept us unbeaten in the conference and ahead of Washington in the standings heading into our showdown with them on Friday. We approach every game like it is the most important game yet, but this one was definitely a nice victory.
Q: What do you think was the biggest difference in the game?
A: I'd say it was Donnie Haywood's presence in the paint; so many times I was able to just feed it into him in there and he'd just find a way to lay it in or draw the foul. Add to that the offensive rebounds he grabbed to give us another scoring chance, and together those two things made a huge difference.
Q: How exciting was that dunk you set up for him right before halftime?
A: Oh man, I was in awe of Donnie on that play. I got out on the fast break, and as I neared the hoop I saw him flying in as the trailer, so I just flipped it back to him. He must have jumped almost ten feet in front of the basket, and then he hammered it in there. It was one of the most fun plays I’ve ever been a part of, especially with the fans getting so riled up by it.
Q: What about your clutch shots late in the game; that really sealed the deal, no?
A: Yeah Central didn’t give up, and they were playing really tough to get the game back within two points. Late in the game I was just bringing the ball up the court and then killing time, and I had a few open looks as the shot clock ran down that I was able to convert.
Q: What was going through your mind when you launched that baseline three with well under a minute left?
A: We were up by three and I was trying to run down the clock, but I got forced over toward the baseline where I didn’t want to be. There were only a few seconds on the shot clock, and I didn’t see an open teammate so I decided to just take one step back and launch a three. Luckily I made it and then Central couldn’t score on the next possession, so that was basically the game.
